The Jack in the Green

We’re delighted to be able to recommend a very special place to stop for lunch as you travel down to Fowey. Just five minutes from the M5 at Junction 29 (near to Exeter), the Jack in the Green at Rockbeare is both a pub and restaurant that never fails to amaze.

Owned for the past sixteen years by rugby loving Paul Parnell, the Jack oozes honesty, panache and that rare four letter word - CARE. The team deliberately eschews the term ‘Gastropub’ and has been careful not to make the Jack purely a dining venue or to exclude families. Menus are innovative with just a touch of alchemy and local produce always features strongly.

In the new state of the art kitchen, Matthew Mason and a brigade of eight, cook from the heart and make sure seasonality comes through in every dish. Pub grub classics are given a delicious kick up the backside and there is always a great selection of local ales to choose from. A beer garden, together with the introduction of some regional, thirst quenching ciders, will be ready for early Summer.

The awards speak for themselves and now extend to Scott Paton who recently won the International Pastry Chef of the Year title. Aside from supporting a number of small, artisan producers, the Jack also has a well deserved reputation for helping the local community. From the Wooden Spoon charity to West Hill Primary School and the Prince's Trust, the whole team use their individual expertise and enthusiasm to support several key projects each year.
